MULLA SADRA ON SUBSTANCE AND ACCIDENT

ISLAMIC PHIL THEO .

Mulla Sadra on Substance & Accident:
According to Mulla Sadra accidents (aradh) such as taste, color and smell reside within the substance (jauhar) of a thing (shay) and arise as a result of the existence of the substance and therefore do not have an independent existence of their own but are dependent upon the substance (jauhar) for their existence.

It is the substance (jauhar) of an object that has an independent existence and not its accidents because accidents need the substance for their appearance and existence.

Mulla Sadra argued that if the accidents (aradh) cannot exist independently of the substance so how can they change independently of the substance?

Therefore Mulla Sadra stated that changes in accidents such as taste, color and smell occur as a result of a change in the substance, in other words it could be said that changes in accidents are the effects caused by a change in substance.

Mulla Sadra refers to this change in substance as substantial motion or “harkat-al-jauhariya”.

In other words it could be asserted that change in substance (jauhar) is caused by substantial motion (harkat-al-jauhariya), and this change in substance in its turn causes changes in accidents (aradh).

Therefore it can be safely concluded that substantial motion (harkat-al-jauhariya) is the main cause for change in both substance as well as accidents.
